2025 WSOP Main Event

Mucked cards are back in the news at the 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) after a player retrieved his hand from the muck on Day 1a of the Main Event, only to promptly bust to a cooler.

The hand occurred during Level 3 of the $10,000 buy-in World Championship event — the blinds at 200/400. PokerNewslive reporter Liam Gannon captured a hand that left a player screaming expletives on the way out the door.

Brutal Way to Exit the WSOP Main Event

The biggest event each year in poker began with a few early eliminations, including a Lauren Hazelgreen going out with top pair and Chris Moneymaker, the 2003 champ, running into a brutal cooler to bust.

Those hands were less dramatic than a Level 3 pot that should get some attention on social media. The hand, as reported by Gannon, began with Marios Savvides calling in an early position. Ritvars Cekalins, in the cutoff, raised to 1,500 with Kristopher Rundquist making the call behind him.

Al Riccobono, the big blind, three-bet to 5,000, and Savvides answered by tossing in a single 5,000 chip and said call. But he was unaware of the re-raise and thought he was only calling the initial raise. He then, after realizing that he was facing a three-bet, tossed his cards into the muck.

The only problem for Savvides was that he had already made a legal call by putting the 5,000 chip in the pot. The floor was called over to rule on the incident, and he determined the big chip must stay in the pot. Savvides then argued to get his cards back, pointing at the two cards that were mostly separated from the muck. He walked aside and told the floor exactly what his holdings were, and the floor confirmed it was the correct two cards.

Cekalins and Rundquist then called, and the flop, which came out A49, went four-way. Riccobono bet 7,000 to see only Savvides call.

The turn was the Q, which turned out to be quite the action card. Riccobono, who had AAfor top set, moved all in for 19,300 effective, and Savvides snap-called drawing dead with AQ, top two pair.

"That's ridiculous," screamed Savvides as he stood out of his chair, seeing that he was drawing dead to Riccobono's set of aces. The river 8was a moot point as Savvides screamed many expletives on his way out of the tournament.

"This is f*****g ridiculous the way this hand f*****g played out," Savvides continued as he left the tournament area in frustration.
